Matthew Perry is in recovery after being rushed to hospital to undergo gastrointestinal perforation surgery.

A representative for the star said in a statement: “Matthew Perry recently underwent surgery in a Los Angeles hospital to repair a gastrointestinal perforation.”

“He is grateful for the concern and asks for continued privacy as he heals,” a rep told US publication PEOPLE.

According to the NHS a gastrointestinal perforation occurs when a hole develops in the bowel wall and if not treated can be life-threatening.

Symptoms of gastrointestinal perforation include nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, chills, high temperature, rapid heartbeat, failure to pass urine and swelling of the abdomen.

Matthew, who played Chandler Bing in the TV show Friends, has spoken in the past about his health battles, including his struggle with alcohol and vicodin.

“I couldn’t stop,” he told PEOPLE in 2013.

“Eventually things got so bad that I couldn’t hide it, and then everybody knew.”

He also spoken openly about his time in rehab two years later and described the experience of getting sober as “hard”.

Speaking about the Phoenix House, a California-based treatment centre, he said: “You can’t have a drug problem for 30 years and then expect to have it be solved in 28 days.”

The 48-year-old star went on to tell The Hollywood Reporter: “At Phoenix House, I was very moved by the hope that I saw there, which is what this is all about.

“Getting sober is a really hard thing to do.”

Now, Matthew, who was honoured with the 2015 Phoenix Rising Award, helps other recovering addicts on their journey to sobriety.

“I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in my life. I’ve learned a lot from my failures,” Matthew explained.

“But the best thing about me is if an alcoholic comes up to me and says: ‘Can you help me stop drinking?’ I can say, ‘Yes.’”

Matthew shot to fame in the 1990s as the charismatic and beloved Chandler Bing in the hugely success US series Friends.

He starred alongside Hollywood stars including Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer.

Friends aired its last episode in 2004, however all 10 series were released on Netflix in January this year.

The actor had previously revealed he would not take part in a reboot of the series as it ended on “such a high”.

Last year Matthew told Variety: “If anybody asks me, I’m gonna say no. The thing is: we ended on such a high. We can’t beat it. Why would we go and do it again?” has contacted a representative for Matthew Perry for comment.
